A cell cycle checkpoint that monitors and signals errors in the placement or orientation of the spindle in the cell. The result is a cell cycle delay, usually in mitosis, until errors are corrected. A signal transduction based surveillance mechanism that ensures the fidelity of cell division by preventing the premature advance of cells from metaphase to anaphase prior to the successful attachment of kinetochores to spindle microtubules (spindle assembly).
