Posttranscriptional addition of a methyl group to either a nucleotide or 2'-O ribose in a polyribonucleotide. Usually uses S-adenosylmethionine as a cofactor. The posttranscriptional addition of methyl groups to specific residues in an rRNA molecule. The addition of a methyl group to an atom in the nucleoside base portion of a nucleotide residue in an rRNA molecule. The addition of a methyl group to the N7 atom in the base portion of a guanine nucleotide residue in an rRNA molecule. The covalent alteration of one or more nucleotides within an rRNA molecule to produce an rRNA molecule with a sequence that differs from that coded genetically.
