The process of sparing extrathymically maturing T cells which react with self-MHC protein complexes with low affinity levels from apoptotic death. The process of elimination of extrathymically maturing T cells which react strongly with self-antigens. The process whereby a precursor cell type acquires the specialized features of a T cell via a differentiation pathway independent of the thymus.
