The morphological and physiological alterations undergone by mitochondria during apoptosis. The process by which the anatomical structures of a mitochondrion are generated and organized. Morphogenesis pertains to the creation of form. The division of a mitochondrion within a cell to form two or more separate mitochondrial compartments. The creation of two or more organelles by division of one organelle. A form of programmed cell death that begins when a cell receives internal or external signals that trigger the activity of proteolytic caspases, proceeds through a series of characteristic stages typically including rounding-up of the cell, retraction of pseudopodes, reduction of cellular volume (pyknosis), chromatin condensation, nuclear fragmentation (karyorrhexis), and plasma membrane blebbing (but maintenance of its integrity until the final stages of the process), and ends with the death of the cell. A process that is carried out at the cellular level which results in the assembly, arrangement of constituent parts, or disassembly of a mitochondrion; includes mitochondrial morphogenesis and distribution, and replication of the mitochondrial genome as well as synthesis of new mitochondrial components. The change in the morphology of the mitochondria in an apoptotic cell from a highly branched network to a fragmented vesicular form.
