The process whereby phagocytes engulf external particulate material. The particles are initially contained within phagocytic vacuoles (phagosomes), which then fuse with primary lysosomes to effect digestion of the particles. The recognition and removal of an apoptotic cell by a neighboring cell or by a phagocyte. The process by which a cell interprets signals (in the form of specific proteins and lipids) on the surface of a dying cell which it will engulf and remove by phagocytosis. The removal of the apoptotic cell by phagocytosis, by a neighboring cell or by a phagocyte. A type of vesicle-mediated transport in which cells take up external materials or membrane constituents by the invagination of small region of the plasma membrane to form a new membrane-bounded vesicle.
