A double membrane structure enclosing an organelle, including two lipid bilayers and the region between them. In some cases, an organelle envelope may have more than two membranes. Either of the lipid bilayers that surround the mitochondrion and form the mitochondrial envelope. The inner, i.e. lumen-facing, lipid bilayer of the mitochondrial envelope. It is highly folded to form cristae. The outer, i.e. cytoplasm-facing, lipid bilayer of the mitochondrial envelope.
