The modification of peptidyl-cysteine. The alteration of an amino acid residue in a peptide. The posttranslational glycosylation of protein via the sulfur atom of peptidyl-cysteine, forming S-glycosyl-L-cysteine. A protein modification process that results in the addition of a sugar unit to a protein amino acid, e.g. the addition of glycan chains to proteins. A protein amino acid glycosylation process in which a sugar unit is added to a protein via a sulfur atom of a peptidyl-amino-acid such as cysteine or methionine.
