Catalysis of the oxidative decarboxylation of malate with the concomitant production of pyruvate. Catalysis of the reversible conversion of pyruvate or oxaloacetate to malate. Catalysis of an oxidation-reduction (redox) reaction in which a CH-OH group act as a hydrogen or electron donor and reduces a hydrogen or electron acceptor. Catalysis of the reaction: (S)-malate + NAD+ = pyruvate + CO2 + NADH + H+. Also decarboxylates oxaloacetate. Catalysis of an oxidation-reduction (redox) reaction in which a CH-OH group acts as a hydrogen or electron donor and reduces NAD+ or NADP.
