A developmental process by which a progressive change in the state of some part of an organism specifically contributes to its ability to form offspring. Initiation of a somatic embryo-an embryo arising from previously differentiated somatic cells, rather than from fused haploid gametes. The process whose specific outcome is the progression of the seed over time, from its formation to the mature structure. For plant vegetative embryos, this would be from the initial determination of the cell or group of cells to form an embryo until the point when the embryo becomes independent of the parent plant. The process whose specific outcome is the progression of the embryo over time, from zygote formation to the end of seed dormancy. An example of this process is found in Arabidopsis thaliana.
