The interconnected cell membranes and intracellular regions of a plant. The interconnections occur via the plasmodesmata. A cell junction that forms a connection between two cells; excludes direct cytoplasmic junctions such as ring canals. A fine cytoplasmic channel, found in all higher plants, that connects the cytoplasm of one cell to that of an adjacent cell. A plasmodesma with a branched structure, often with many channels leading into a larger central cavity; found in older tissues and usually derived from preexisting primary plasmodesmata.
