A compact and highly condensed form of chromatin. A region of heterochromatin located near the centromere of a chromosome. A region in which centric, heterochromatic portions of one or more chromosomes form a compact structure. A diffusely banded region of heterochromatin located between euchromatin and alpha-heterochromatin in the polytene chromosome chromocenter; normally replicated during polytenization. A region at which the centric regions of polytene chromosomes are joined together. The region of a chromosome that includes the centromeric DNA and associated proteins. In monocentric chromosomes, this region corresponds to a single area of the chromosome, whereas in holocentric chromosomes, it is evenly distributed along the chromosome. A type of chromosome in a polyploid cell, formed when multiple copies of homologous chromosomes are aligned side by side to give a giant chromosome in which distinct chromosome bands are readily visible.
