The initial attachment of a membrane or protein to a target membrane. Docking requires only that the proteins come close enough to interact and adhere. Any process that is carried out at the cellular level, but not necessarily restricted to a single cell. For example, cell communication occurs among more than one cell, but occurs at the cellular level. The initial attachment of a membrane to a target membrane, mediated by proteins protruding from the two membranes. Docking requires only that the membranes come close enough for the proteins to interact and adhere. The aggregation, arrangement and bonding together of a set of components to form a nucleus-vacuole junction, which are membrane contact sites formed between the vacuole membrane and the outer nuclear membrane. In S. cerevisiae these contacts are mediated through direct physical interaction between Vac8p and Nvj1p.
