Any cellular process that depends upon or alters the actin cytoskeleton, that part of the cytoskeleton comprising actin filaments and their associated proteins. The actin-mediated process by which the apical end of a polarized columnar epithelial cell contracts. The actin filament-based movement by which cytoplasmic actin filaments slide past one another resulting in a contraction that propels the cell from one place to another. The actin filament-based process by which cytoplasmic actin filaments slide past one another resulting in contraction of all or part of the cell body. Any process that is carried out at the cellular level, but not necessarily restricted to a single cell. For example, cell communication occurs among more than one cell, but occurs at the cellular level. The translocation of the cell body forward during cell migration, mediated by tractional force on its substrate and tension in the cortical cytoskeleton. Adhesions transmit propulsive forces and serve as traction points over which the cell moves. The sliding movement of actin thin filaments and myosin thick filaments past each other.
