Enables the directed movement of sterols into, out of, within or between cells. Sterol are steroids with one or more hydroxyl groups and a hydrocarbon side-chain in the molecule. Catalysis of the transfer of a solute or solutes from one side of a membrane to the other according to the reaction: ATP + H2O + lipid(in) = ADP + phosphate + lipid(out). Catalysis of the transfer of a solute or solutes from one side of a membrane to the other according to the reaction: ATP + H2O + sterol(in) = ADP + phosphate + sterol(out). Catalysis of the reaction: ATP + H2O = ADP + phosphate to directly drive the active transport of a substance across a membrane. Enables the directed movement of lipids into, out of, within or between cells.
