Positional information is established through protein signals that emanate from a localized source within a cell (the initial one-cell zygote) or within a developmental field. The process whereby a relatively unspecialized cell acquires specialized features of a neuron. The process whose specific outcome is the progression of the subpallium over time, from its formation to the mature structure. The subpallium is the base region of the telencephalon.
