The stepwise addition of sugar residues to the initially added O-linked sugar (usually GalNAc) to form the core 4 O-glycan structure, GlcNAc-beta-1->6(GlcNAc-beta-1->3)-GalNAc. A protein amino acid glycosylation process in which a sugar unit is added to a protein via the hydroxyl group of peptidyl-serine, peptidyl-threonine, peptidyl-hydroxylysine, or peptidyl-hydroxyproline, or via the phenol group of peptidyl-tyrosine, forming an O-glycan.
