Enables the directed movement of sterols into, out of, within or between cells. Sterol are steroids with one or more hydroxyl groups and a hydrocarbon side-chain in the molecule. Catalysis of the transfer of a solute or solutes from one side of a membrane to the other according to the reaction: ATP + H2O + sterol(in) = ADP + phosphate + sterol(out). Enables the directed movement of cholesterol into, out of, within or between cells. Cholesterol is the principal sterol of vertebrates and the precursor of many steroids, including bile acids and steroid hormones. Enables the directed movement of a specific substance or group of related substances (such as macromolecules, small molecules, ions) into, out of, within or between cells. Catalysis of the transfer of sterol from one side of the membrane to the other, up the solute's concentration gradient. The transporter binds the solute and undergoes a series of conformational changes. Transport works equally well in either direction. Enables the directed movement of lipids into, out of, within or between cells.
