The process whereby a relatively unspecialized cell acquires specialized features of a stem cell. A stem cell is a cell that retains the ability to divide and proliferate throughout life to provide progenitor cells that can differentiate into specialized cells. The process whereby the developmental fate of a cell becomes restricted such that it will develop into a satellite cell. The commitment of cells to specific cell fates and their capacity to differentiate into particular kinds of cells. Positional information is established through protein signals that emanate from a localized source within a cell (the initial one-cell zygote) or within a developmental field. The developmental sequence of events leading to the formation of adult muscle that occurs in the anima. In vertebrate skeletal muscle the main events are: the fusion of myoblasts to form myotubes that increase in size by further fusion to them of myoblasts, the formation of myofibrils within their cytoplasm and the establishment of functional neuromuscular junctions with motor neurons. At this stage they can be regarded as mature muscle fibers. The process whereby a cell becomes capable of differentiating autonomously into a satellite cell regardless of its environment; upon determination, the cell fate cannot be reversed. The process whereby the developmental fate of a cell becomes restricted such that it will develop into a stem cell. The process whereby a cell becomes capable of differentiating autonomously into a satellite cell in an environment that is neutral with respect to the developmental pathway. Upon specification, the cell fate can be reversed. The process whereby a relatively unspecialized cell acquires specialized features of a satellite cell.
