Catalysis of an oxidation-reduction (redox) reaction in which a sulfur-containing group acts as a hydrogen or electron donor and reduces a hydrogen or electron acceptor. Catalysis of the reaction: adenosine 3',5'-bisphosphate + sulfite + thioredoxin disulfide = 3'-phosphoadenosine 5'-phosphosulfate + thioredoxin. Thioredoxin disulfide is the oxidized form of thioredoxin; 3'-phosphoadenosine 5'-phosphosulfate is also known as PAPS.
