The change in morphology and behavior of a mature or immature T cell resulting from exposure to a mitogen, cytokine, chemokine, cellular ligand, or an antigen for which it is specific. The process whereby a relatively unspecialized T cell acquires specialized features of a cytotoxic T cell. The process by which a precursor cell type acquires characteristics of a more mature T-cell. A T cell is a type of lymphocyte whose definin characteristic is the expression of a T cell receptor complex. The process whereby a relatively unspecialized precursor cell acquires specialized features of B cells, T cells, or natural killer cells. Any process that stops, prevents or reduces the frequency, rate or extent of cytotoxic T cell differentiation. The process whereby a precursor cell type acquires the specialized features of a CD8-positive, alpha-beta cytotoxic T cell. Any process that activates or increases the frequency, rate or extent of cytotoxic T cell differentiation. Any process that modulates the frequency, rate or extent of cytotoxic T cell differentiation.
